At least 56 people have been killed and dozens more were injured in an airstrike on a camp for the displaced in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region, aid workers told Reuters news agency on Saturday and confirmed by local authorities.

The aid workers, who requested not to be named, also provided photographs of people wounded in hospital, including a number of children.

Government forces have been fighting rebels in Tigray for over a year in a war that has killed thousands on both sides.

Military spokesperson, Colonel Getnet Adane, and government spokesperson, Legesse Tulu, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The government has previously denied targeting civilians in the 14-month conflict with Tigrayan forces.

The strike hit the camp in the town of Dedebit in the north-west of the region, near the border with Eritrea, according to the aid workers. (Source: The Guardian)
